It looks like a greyhound and comes from the sight hound family. These dogs have long hairs that come in different colors. The coat of this dog is flat and silky. It may also be wavy or curly. You will notice that the top coat is flat but the rest of the body has waves.

The undercoat of your dog may become thick when it is cold. Most of this coat is shed when it is hot so that the dog does not overheat. The distribution and texture of the coating of borzoi are one of a kind. The neck has a frill, and the tail is feathery. Most parts of the dog including the ears are covered with curly fur that adds beauty to your dog.

Male borzois weigh 45 kg, and they are 30 inches tall. A female borzoi is shorter since it is 26 inches tall. The shape of a borzoi is generally curvy and streamlined. It appears to be compact and big.

Borzoi Grooming

These dogs are known to enjoy their comfort. They expect you to provide them with the best care including cozy beds to rest their bony bodies. Their long, silky coat requires high maintenance. You can easily maintain the silky texture of the layer since it is resistant to mud as well as dirt.

The fur needs a pin brush to reach the hair beneath the outer surface. Brush the coat every week. Get rid of mats on the hind legs and ears of your dog. Do not use a wire slicker brush to prevent ruining the fur.

The coat sheds off easily according to the temperature. You need to brush this coat more regularly than you would do for another breed. Bathe your dog only when it is necessary. Get rid of the buildup of tartar by brushing their teeth weekly. You can eliminate bacteria in their teeth by maintaining proper dental hygiene. Regular examinations keep your borzoi away from infections.

Borzoi Temperament

Your dog may be quiet, but it is athletic. Borzois rarely bark, and they are calm. If you need a dog that informs you of an intruder at home, this is not the breed for you. You cannot rely on this dog to guard you. It takes patience and experience to live with a borzoi. Crate training is recommended for this breed.

It is a gentle dog that is sensitive to stimuli. It respects humans and understands house manners. This dog may not be aggressive to strangers, but if you handle it roughly, it can show aggression. Your dog may be reserved towards a person unknown to them, but affectionate to the owner.

Their sensitive personality can cause anxiety when they are around children. With time, this dog adapts well to different surroundings. Your Borzoi is a selective learner that detests repetition. It requires motivation to prevent boredom and stubbornness in this breed.

They are a low-energy breed that loves their comfort. Most of them are lazy and don't like long walks unless you engage them. You can take your dog out for at least twenty minutes every day to engage them in an active lifestyle.

Borzoi Training

It takes proper training for a borzoi to not find repetitive activities boring. If you train them well, they can show obedience and agility. You have to be gentle training a borzoi since they don't like harsh treatment. They hate threats and raised voices at them. You need to be gentle and kind when training your dog as you communicate with it clearly.

They are intelligent dogs that respond to training well when done calmly. They have strong instincts to pursue the things you throw for them to catch. Their speed allows them to run long distances in a short period. They also have the endurance to withstand training and learn fast.

You can train your dog to live with your cat or small animals as long as you do the introduction from a young age. Training is easy when you start it early enough.

Borzoi History

Borzois reign from Russian dogs of Asian Countries. Thanks to a devoted Soviet soldier, Borzois were approved by the Soviet government. It started in 1940 when Constantin Estmont illustrated the different borzois to the Soviet government. He was concerned about borzois getting extinct since hunters took advantage of the fur. They were initially used to hunt animals such as wolves, fox, and rabbit.

The Soviet government, therefore, regulated their breeding. They have since been distributed in countries such as England, Western Europe, American, and Scandinavia. This distribution gave room for the breed of dogs to establish itself in new counties. In countries such as Europe, they are now used as royalty companions.
